CREATING BEAUTIFUL HANGING BASKETSAND CONTAINERS Thursday 28th April 2016

Around 50 people attended the annual lecture at Swarkestone Nursery were David Allison gave us a practical demonstration on how to create your own beautiful hanging baskets. David started his demonstration by lining a hanging basket with moss. Using a peat based multipurpose compost he put the first of 4 layers of compost in the basket. He was then able to set his first layer of plants up through the moss and into the compost. He repeated the process another 3 times until the basket was full before finally planting trailing plants in the top of the basket. The best plants for baskets are surfinnias, trailing lobelia, trailing geraniums, fuschias and if you require something edible to grow then tumbling tom tomatoes are ideal. The basket should be given a good soaking before being hung outside. Finally David advised that a basket should not be put outside until the end of May when all chances of frost have gone. The completed basket was duly raffled off at the end of the evening.
